Whether you're planning a trip to some exotic warm-water destination or simply want to check out our local lakes, this is the course you need to start your diving adventure.
There are lots of great places to scuba dive in the world, but you should know that Minnesota has a lot to offer divers. From the shipwrecks of Lake Superior to the underwater forests of the Crosby Mines to our many metro area lakes, there are lots of great places to explore Minnesota underwater.
There are several scuba diving beginners classes around to choose from. We believe that we offer the finest, most complete scuba training you can find. Most courses provide you with the basics. Our scuba diving class combines the fun of diving with a thorough education to help you become a safe comfortable and confident diver.
NAUI Scuba Diver Certification is the complete course to teach you how to dive. There are three parts to the class - Classroom, Pool, and Openwater
(Lake or Ocean).
This class is limited to 6 students in the classroom, pool, and open water.
Our standards require that if we have more than 4 students in the open water portion of your course - we will have an Assistant or Divemaster as well as you r Instructor. These ratios ensure that all students will get the supervision and guidance neccesary to create a safe, controlled learning experience.

Smith Diving provides additional classroom & pool sessions at no charge for any student requiring more scuba experience to reach the necessary level of comfort and competence. *One extra pool refresher session is offered to all students prior to their open-water certification.
Classroom instruction topics include: equipment, physics, physiology of diving, safe diving practices, emergency management, dive computers, marine life, and more.
These sessions are presented in an informal lecture setting. Your classroom training will include question and answer time and class discussion of the topics presented.
Your pool skills will include: snorkeling/skin-diving techniques, equipment assembly & use, proper buddy procedures, basic scuba skills, and emergency procedures. We provide all scuba equipment neccesary for your pool training. We have a huge selection of state of the art equipment so you get a chance to try various models and sizes before you purchase your own gear. Students are required o supplly their own scuba quality mask, snorkel, boots and strap fins by the 4th class session. We'll provide a variety of masks for your first few pool sessions to help you select the mask that's just right for your face.
Openwater training consists of 1 Snorkel and 4 Scuba dives of approx. 40 minutes each. These are usually completed in 2 days at a local lake or they can be completed during a warm-water vacation. Your open-water sessions include actual real dive experience. We will not ask you to simply surface swim out to some platform and then descend only long enough to perform a few skills, you'll actually be diving!
The price of our class includes some of the finest learning material available to scuba divers anywhere. Your Student Kit contains many hours of support material and study aids. People learn in different ways and we encourage our students to use these tools to make their scuba education more successful and enjoyable. That being said, we do not believe anyone can or should teach themselves to dive through a home-study or correspondence course!
Being a safe scuba diver means being able to make good, well-informed decisions, and having a complete knowledge of the rules and skills neccesary. With forty years experience in training safe scuba divers, we have learned that a real education in diving requires a classroom setting with a real Instructor who can guide you through the adventure of learning to dive.
Please, don't teach yourself to dive.
