Smith Diving - About Us

Bill King

Meet the Minnesota Wimp diver. Bill hates to be cold, so he’s the one at the dive shop most likely wearing a stocking cap in July. As a certified WD, he’s a confirmed dry suit diver and seldom wears a wetsuit in Minnesota.

Bill King

Bill did not attain his WD status the easy way. He earned it. Bill has been teaching diving at all levels from beginner through instructor since before his hair was gray. In addition to teaching at Smith Diving, Bill has worked for Underwater Outfitters in Detroit, Water World in Durham, NC, Divers Alert Network (DAN), and Poseidon Adventures in Cairns, Australia.

These experiences have allowed him to travel and teach throughout the Midwest, Ontario, Caribbean, and Great Barrier Reef. He generally takes his favorite dive buddy, his wife Candy, along to show him the ropes and keep him safe.

Bill is occasionally allowed to decompress with a group of instructor candidates or ice diving students (Can you believe that a WD would go hard-water diving?). His true love, however, is teaching the NAUI Scuba Diver Course (beginner). He says he learns right along with his students, and he still finds it exciting to blow bubbles in the pool.

Bill With Chainsaw

When he’s not poking around shipwrecks in the Great Lakes or dodging jellyfish in the South Pacific, Bill spends his free time teaching students with special needs in Minneapolis.

If you see someone at the dive shop asking lots of questions or trying on all the new gear, it might well be Bill. If he's wearing a stocking hat, then you know for sure it's him.
