Our Story

Since George Smith opened the doors in 1966, Smith Diving has led thousands of new divers under water to experience the thrill of diving.

Originally George issued his own certification cards.  NAUI, then just 5 years old was beginning to really define how to teach scuba and George signed on.  Smith Diving is now one of the Oldest NAUI affiliates in the world (NAUI #F005).

There are still some "dinosaurs" around who took their dive training in George's own swimming pool (in his garage).

Over the years the shop has seen quite a few changes, including 5 locations and 4 owners.  George sold the shop to Greg Hegi who helped build on a already strong reputation for safety and service.

Terry Lovaasen owned Smith Diving for 22 years and should get most of the credit for the shops reputation for "the quality difference" in safety and commitment to the diving public.

In January, 2004 Terry sold the shop to Lee & Sheila Bailey-Seiler.  Sheila is one of those who took their training in George's garage.  She also spent some time working in the store during the 80's.  Lee became certified as a requirement to marry into the Bailey family and has been diving since 1981.  Lee has worked full time at Smith Diving since 1997.

Lee & Sheila are proud to take over the responsibility for the Smith reputation and will guard it jealously.

In April 2007 we celebrated our move to our new bigger store location. The new store gives us room for 2 classrooms and a beautiful new showfloor.

The NAUI philosophy of "Safety through education" has always served Smith Diving well, and will continue to be the guiding force for all that we do.
